Did you know…?
Honey contains naturally occurring plant compounds called bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids are produced by plants to protect themselves against UV radiation, as a type of natural sunscreen to reduce cellular damage. The depletion of Ozone over Antarctica during the latter half of last century, unfortunately, did impact on NZ due to its close proximity, resulting in very high UV radiation exposure. A positive impact this may have had is that NZ’s flora has been found to have an extremely high concentration of Bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids are present in bee products including honey and particularly propolis (bee glue), the sticky resinous substance bees collect from plants. Propolis is proven to have antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory benefits and also has been proven to have cancer-fighting properties.
Professor Hiroshi Maruta from Melbourne University discovered New Zealand propolis was at least five times as potent as Brazilian green propolis, already known for its anti-cancer properties.
Dr. Maruta recalled an old German saying that beekeepers never catch cancer. "Actually only one in 3000 beekeepers get cancer, while one in three ordinary people get cancer at least once in their lives.... It has been known for two decades that propolis contains anti-cancer ingredients such as CAPE (caffeic acid phenethyl ester) and ARC (artepillin C)".
